U.S. will use foreign aid for gay rights abroad

The Obama administration announced in a memorandum yesterday that the United States will use foreign aid in initiatives working towards gay rights overseas.

American agencies will look for ways to fight other countries’ efforts to criminalize homosexuality, even if it jeopardizes our relationship with some allies that currently ban homosexuality, such as Saudi Arabia. 

Governor and presidential candidate Rick Perry was quick to criticize the president’s decision, saying it was an endorsement of “the homosexual lifestyle” (yeah, that again). The LGBT community, on the other hand, could see this as a major plus for Obama in the upcoming election. From the New York Times:

“I am deeply concerned by the violence and discrimination targeting L.G.B.T. persons around the world,” Mr. Obama said in the memorandum, referring to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, “whether it is passing laws that criminalize L.G.B.T. status, beating citizens simply for joining peaceful L.G.B.T. pride celebrations, or killing men, women and children for their perceived sexual orientation.”

Specifically, Mr. Obama said in the memorandum that the State Department would lead other federal agencies to help ensure that the government provides a “swift and meaningful response to serious incidents that threaten the human rights” of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people abroad.

This is HUGE, guys. The president is potentially changing well-established relationships with other countries and finally taking a stand against homophobic laws and actions abroad. Well done, sir.
